I was stoked when Apostle approached me to do the design for their Last Sunrise record that was to come out on both CD and LP formats with both US and European releases. That multiplicity offered me more variation on what I could do with it. They had already had another local photographer, Kris Arnold, shoot the main images of the couple, so I just needed to put a theme together to integrate those and set the vibe. I wanted to do some stark colored stuff due to the somberness of the music & band, but didn’t want to do the typical “doom metal” layout. I decided on a brown-ish vibe for the European release and a similar blue-colored one for the US.
This design caused a bit of a stir for the band when it came out, not because of the violent image of the couple or anything, but because fans thought it looked like a “metalcore” cover rather than fitting in the doom genre the band actually plays. The music got good reviews, the art… not so much. I am pretty pleased with it and love how all the releases fit together into a cohesive vibe.
