I was raised on punk rock, heavy metal and skateboarding from the time I was 13. Mind you this was the 80s, and I fuckin’ loved growing up in the 80s. That makes me “old” today, but I’m totally fine with my place in history.
It all started with my best friend’s older brother, me sneaking into his room to put some of his records onto tapes: Dead Kennedys, 999, Black Flag, etc. Then from scooping up all the Dio, Clash, Pink Floyd and Van Halen cassettes that my “16 tapes for a penny” mail order club had to offer, shoplifting tapes from Target (and getting busted), to buying ALL the magazines and literally stapling images all over my walls, I’ve always been addicted to media, to stuff. I love holding things in my hands and having that immersive tactile experience with the things I enjoy and I’m the person I am today because of this. I read the thanks lists, check out the lyrics, scour the packaging – really digest the piece as a whole.
I’m not sure I fit in the modern age where everything is fleeting and disposable with our 5 second attention spans and 6 second Vine videos, so I’m doing my best to keep music artifacts alive, hence the name Long Live Design Labs, I want this sort of media to carry on. I hope that I can do even the smallest part to maybe help others gain or keep that passion I’ve had since I was a teen.
I started making hardcore zines in my 20s, starting with late nights ripping off the local Kinkos making cut-and-paste ones, then later on moved into digital layouts and a “professional” newsprint magazine with national distribution. In doing so it became apparent that my favorite part of the whole process was doing the layout and design, so at a pretty late age I decided to go to school for it. I now have my BFA in Visual Communication from the Herron School of Art here in Indianapolis.
I’ve always played in bands and have been “active” in the music scene here in Indy and nationally, and in doing so I’ve made contacts and have had the opportunity to produce the work you see here. It’s awesome to be a part of this, to be able to call so many talented people (that I find inspiring) my friends and clients. It’s all those people that allow me to do what I do. If you like what you see here and want me to do this with you, hit me up.
